Serena Olsaretti
I am a political philosopher based at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where I hold a research professorship with ICREA, the Catalan Institute of Research and Advanced Studies. Before moving to Barcelona in 2010, I was a University Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St. John´s College. Before that, I was a Research Fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
At Pompeu Fabra, I am in the Department of Law and a member of the Law & Philosophy Group; I am also a member of the Scientific Committee of the BIAP – the Barcelona Institute for Analytic Philosophy. My research has focused on theories of justice, the ethics of markets and theories of well-being. Since moving to Universitat Pompeu Fabra I have been especially interested in questions of justice involving the family, but have also continued to work on libertarianism, desert and egalitarianism. Between 2015 and 2021 I was the PI of an ERC Consolidator Grant funded project on Justice and the Family: An Analysis of the Normative Significance of Procreation and Parenthood in a Just Society). I am currently writing a book on Parental Justice. You can find more information about me here and here. To contact me, please write to me at serena dot olsaretti at upf dot edu |

Teaching & Supervising
I teach in the one-year MA in Political Philosophy at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, which I give a brief presentation about here.
I am happy to supervise M.A. and Ph.D. theses in various areas of contemporary political and moral philosophy.
If you are interested in the possibility of working with me for a Ph.D., please feel free to contact me by email to discuss it. My PhD students typically write in English.
I have been a co-supervisor of doctoral students based at other institutions; but prospective doctoral students intending to move to UPF would need to apply to the Department of Law’s doctoral programme. Some information about source of funding to study for a PhD at Pompeu Fabra is here.
If you are interested in working alongside me as a post-doctoral researcher, you may be eligible to apply for a Eutopia Post-Doctoral Fellowship to come to Pompeu Fabra. More information about other research programmes, both state and EU funded, may be found by contacting the university’s research service.
Some information about various aspects of living in Barcelona while at Pompeu Fabra can be found here.
